Roles come and go: every role with a start, an end and an owner, and any question asked as at a date
Cato climbed a ladder of public offices, each held for one year, and ended it as censor, writing down every citizen. Today the university counts who's enrolled on census date. Each night its systems tell the platform how they see Linh that day, written over the next, so when Planning asks about last year, she counts as a student months before she came back. Noor and Mei give every role the same shape: the person, the kind of role, its owner, what it relates to, and when it starts and ends. Then a line at any date says which roles are open: Linh counts once, as a student who works here, last year's number stays as it was, and a contract entered late counts from the day it began.
